Product Overview
Cellulose ethers occupy a unique position in industrial chemistry: they are derived from renewable, naturally abundant cellulose — the structural polymer of plant cell walls — yet deliver precisely engineered functional performance that synthetic polymers often cannot match at equivalent cost. The etherification process replaces some of the hydroxyl groups on the cellulose backbone with ether substituents such as methoxy, hydroxypropoxy, or hydroxyethoxy groups, fundamentally altering solubility, viscosity, and thermal gelation behavior while preserving biodegradability.
Yisheng manufactures the three principal cellulose ether families: HEC (hydroxyethylcellulose), HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), and HEMC (hydroxyethyl methylcellulose), each available in a range of viscosity grades and particle sizes tailored to specific end-use requirements. Our in-house R&D centre continuously optimises substitution degree, molecular weight distribution, and surface treatment to develop grades that meet the most demanding formulation requirements in each application sector.
The Shangyu facility sits within the Hangzhou Bay National Industrial Park, providing excellent logistics connectivity to major Chinese ports for export shipments. Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001 standards, and all products are manufactured under strict process controls with full traceability from raw cotton linter or wood pulp inputs through to finished powder.

Application
Yisheng cellulose ethers serve a broad spectrum of industries. Key application areas include:
- Construction & Dry Mix Mortar: HPMC and HEMC are the primary functional additives in tile adhesives, renders, wall putty, self-leveling compounds, and EIFS systems, providing water retention, workability, and open time.
- Water-Based Coatings: HEC is the preferred thickener and rheology modifier in latex paints and architectural coatings, delivering smooth application, anti-sag performance, and storage stability.
- Oil & Gas Drilling: Specially purified HEC grades serve as viscosifiers and fluid-loss control agents in water-based drilling muds and completion fluids, withstanding high salinity and elevated temperatures.
- Personal Care & Cosmetics: HEC and HPMC function as thickeners, film-formers, and stabilisers in shampoos, conditioners, skin creams, lotions, and toothpaste.
- Pharmaceuticals: Pharmaceutical-grade HPMC is used as a tablet binder, coating agent, sustained-release matrix former, and excipient in capsule shells, meeting USP/EP/JP standards.
- Other Industries: Ceramics (extrusion binder), PVC polymerisation (protective colloid), detergents (anti-redeposition agent), and agriculture (pesticide carrier).
Usage Note: Always dissolve cellulose ether in cold water first to prevent agglomeration; hot water causes premature gelation for HPMC grades. Storage should be in a cool, dry environment away from moisture and heat sources.
