Product Overview
HEMC occupies a distinctive middle ground between HEC and HPMC in the cellulose ether family. The methyl groups introduce mild thermal gelation behavior and surface activity, while the hydroxyethyl groups moderate gelation temperature, improve wettability of dry ingredients, and extend compatibility with electrolyte-containing systems. The net result is a cellulose ether that performs reliably across a broader range of cement and gypsum chemistry conditions than pure HPMC in some formulations.
In building material applications, HEMC is particularly valued in gypsum-based products (machine plasters, joint compounds, skimming plasters) where its electrolyte compatibility and moderate gelation temperature provide longer workability and improved surface smoothness compared to high-methoxy HPMC grades. In coating applications, HEMC provides a flatter, more matte appearance in interior emulsion paints compared to HEC, which can be advantageous in premium architectural finishes.
Yisheng's HEMC is available in both standard (cold-water dissolving) and surface-treated (delayed-dissolve) forms. Surface-treated grades are essential for industrial dry-mix mortar production lines where the cellulose ether must survive mechanical blending and bagging without premature hydration.

Application
- Gypsum-Based Plasters & Skim Coats: HEMC's compatibility with calcium sulfate chemistry and its extended workability window make it the preferred cellulose ether for machine-applied gypsum plasters. It reduces sagging on vertical surfaces and improves surface smoothness.
- Joint Fillers & Finishing Compounds: In interior joint compounds and finishing plasters, HEMC provides the smooth trowelability and crack resistance required for high-quality interior surface finishing.
- Self-Leveling Underlayments: HEMC controls the flow and setting behavior of self-leveling floor compounds, preventing excessive bleed water while maintaining adequate flow for self-leveling action.
- Interior & Exterior Emulsion Paints: Coating-grade HEMC functions as a thickener with good flow and levelling characteristics, providing a slightly flatter sheen in matte and eggshell finishes compared to HEC-thickened paints — advantageous for premium interior paint brands.
- Repair Mortars & Waterproofing Slurries: HEMC improves the application properties of cementitious repair mortars and crystalline waterproofing systems, extending pot life and preventing rapid drying on hot substrates.
Formulation Note: HEMC can replace HPMC on a near 1:1 basis in most mortar formulations with minor viscosity adjustments. For gypsum systems specifically, HEMC is often preferred over HPMC due to its lower sensitivity to the ionic environment created by dissolved calcium and sulfate ions.
