Product Overview
HPMC is produced by treating alkali-activated cellulose with methyl chloride and propylene oxide, introducing methoxy (–OCH₃) and hydroxypropoxy (–OCH₂CHOHCH₃) substituents onto the cellulose backbone. The balance of these two substituents — expressed as the degree of methyl substitution (DS) and molar substitution of hydroxypropyl (MS) — determines the gelation temperature, solubility, and surface activity of the final product. Yisheng's R&D team precisely controls DS and MS during synthesis to produce grades optimised for their intended markets.
Architectural-grade HPMC is the cornerstone additive of the dry mix mortar industry. Added at dosages of 0.1–0.5% in cementitious or gypsum-based dry mixes, it provides the water retention necessary for cement hydration in thin-layer applications, improves workability and open time for tilers and plasterers, and reduces cracking through its film-forming properties. Yisheng's architectural grades are available with varying dissolution rates (standard and surface-treated delayed-action) to optimise performance in specific mortar systems.
Daily chemical grade HPMC — used in shampoos, conditioners, skin care, and toothpaste — meets the clarity, purity, and microbiological standards required by cosmetic and personal care regulators globally. Pharmaceutical-grade HPMC (compliant with USP, EP, and JP monographs) is also available for tablet coating, controlled-release matrix, and capsule shell applications.

Application
- Tile Adhesive & Tile Grout: HPMC provides the water retention that keeps the cement hydrated during tile setting, giving installers the open time and slip resistance needed for vertical and large-format tile work. Typical dosage: 0.2–0.4%.
- Machine-Applied Render & External Wall Insulation: In spray-applied mortars and EIFS (external insulation and finishing systems), HPMC controls water retention to prevent premature drying, improving adhesion and reducing shrinkage cracking.
- Wall Putty & Skim Coat: Architectural HPMC imparts smooth spreadability, extends wet workability, and reduces dust and cracking in interior and exterior wall putty formulations.
- Personal Care (Shampoo, Conditioner, Skin Care): Daily chemical HPMC functions as a clear thickener, foam booster, and film-former compatible with a wide range of surfactant systems and actives.
- Pharmaceutical Tablets & Capsules: USP/EP-grade HPMC is used as a binder in wet and dry granulation, as a hydrophilic matrix for controlled-release formulations, and as a film-coating polymer for immediate and sustained-release tablet coatings.
- Gypsum-Based Products: HPMC retains mixing water in gypsum plasters and compounds, extending working time and improving the smoothness of the finished surface.
Application Note: For construction applications, always add HPMC to the dry powder blend before adding water. For cosmetic applications, disperse HPMC in water at room temperature — hot water induces premature gelation and makes dissolution difficult.
