Product Overview
HEC is one of the most commercially important cellulose ethers, prized for its ability to deliver precise, stable viscosity in aqueous systems across a wide pH range (2–12) without the thermal gelation that characterises HPMC. This non-gelling behavior makes it indispensable in applications where stable viscosity at elevated temperatures is required — particularly water-based paints baked at high oven temperatures, shampoo formulations processed in warm mixing vessels, and completion fluids used in hot downhole environments.
Yisheng's HEC is manufactured from high-purity cotton linter cellulose pulp through an alkali-activation and ethylene oxide etherification process. The degree of hydroxyethyl substitution (MS, molar substitution) is carefully controlled to achieve consistent solubility, viscosity build, and clarity in solution. Surface-treated grades are available for delayed dissolution — these dissolve slowly in cold water, allowing dry blending with other powder ingredients before activation upon contact with water in the application.
Our HEC portfolio covers viscosity grades from 100 mPa·s to 150,000 mPa·s (2% aqueous solution, Brookfield), enabling formulators to fine-tune rheology across a wide range of end products. Particle size is available in both standard (60–100 mesh) and fine-ground (120–200 mesh) options to suit different dissolving equipment.

Application
- Water-Based Coatings & Latex Paints: HEC is the dominant thickener in architectural latex paints, functioning as an in-can rheology modifier to prevent settling, provide anti-sag behavior during application, and deliver smooth brushing or rolling characteristics. Typical dosage: 0.1–0.5% by weight of total formulation.
- Oil Well Drilling Fluids: Oil-drilling grade HEC viscosifies water-based drilling muds and completion fluids, controls fluid loss into permeable formations, and stabilises wellbore shale — all while remaining thermally stable in downhole temperatures up to 120°C and compatible with high salinity brines.
- Shampoo & Hair Care: In personal care, HEC builds viscosity in surfactant systems, improves foam texture, and provides a conditioning film-forming effect on hair. It is compatible with anionic, cationic, and non-ionic surfactants — a key advantage over many synthetic polymers.
- Skin Care & Topical Gels: HEC forms clear, smooth gels in cosmetic and pharmaceutical topical formulations, functioning as a thickener in hand sanitisers, eye gels, and wound care products.
- Adhesives & Sealants: Low-viscosity HEC grades function as protective colloids and stabilisers in emulsion adhesives, improving water resistance and open time.
Dissolving Tip: Disperse HEC powder into cold water under moderate agitation to prevent lump formation. For surface-treated (delayed-dissolve) grades, the powder can be pre-blended with other dry ingredients. Allow 30–60 minutes of stirring for full viscosity development.
