Introduction

Wall putty binders are the polymeric and cellulosic additives that give cement- or gypsum-based wall putty its adhesion, smoothness, crack resistance, and sandability after drying. In a typical white cement or gypsum putty formulation, the binder system — comprising HPMC and redispersible polymer powder (RDP) — accounts for less than 5% of the total formula weight but determines the majority of the product's surface performance characteristics.

A well-designed binder system ensures the putty bonds firmly to concrete, brick, and skim-coat surfaces; resists surface cracking during drying shrinkage; sands cleanly to a smooth finish without drag; and accepts paint overcoating without pin-holing or peel. Interior and exterior putty grades differ primarily in RDP content and UV-stable polymer architecture.

White-grade HPMC (low ash, high brightness) is recommended for premium interior putty over plasterboard and gypsum substrates.

Application

  • Interior cement-based putty: HPMC at 0.3–0.45% + RDP at 1–2% delivers smooth application, 2–4 hour pot life, and ≥0.3 N/mm² bond strength.
  • Exterior weatherproof putty: Higher RDP dosage (2.5–3.5%) with UV-stable polymer architecture provides flexibility for thermal cycling and rain resistance.
  • Gypsum-based finish putty: Low-viscosity HPMC (50,000–80,000 mPa·s) at 0.2–0.3% controls set time and ensures a creamy, easy-to-spread consistency.
  • Skim coat over concrete: Medium-viscosity HPMC + RDP bridges minor surface defects, reduces pinholes, and produces a surface suitable for direct paint application.
  • Textured finish putty: High-viscosity HPMC (120,000–150,000 mPa·s) maintains textured patterns after roller or brush application without leveling.
  • Repair filler and crack filler: Higher RDP (3–4%) combined with HPMC provides the flexibility needed to accommodate substrate movement without re-cracking.
  • Q: What HPMC viscosity is best suited for interior wall putty?
  • A: For interior wall putty applied by trowel at 1–3 mm thickness, HPMC viscosity in the range of 75,000–150,000 mPa·s (2% aqueous solution at 20°C) is most commonly specified. Higher viscosity improves water retention and reduces sagging on wall surfaces. For machine-spray putty applications, lower viscosity grades (40,000–60,000 mPa·s) are preferred to reduce pump pressure and improve nozzle flow.
  • Q: Is white-grade HPMC necessary for all putty applications?
  • A: White-grade HPMC (low ash content ≤3%, brightness ≥88% ISO) is necessary when producing bright-white interior putty for high-end residential, hospitality, or healthcare projects where the final painted surface color is critical. For grey cement-based putty intended for concealed or exterior applications, standard grey-grade HPMC (ash ≤5%) is fully adequate and more economical.
  • Q: How does RDP dosage affect the crack resistance of wall putty?
  • A: Increasing RDP from 1% to 2–3% measurably improves crack resistance by increasing the putty's tensile elongation before fracture. Low RDP (1–1.5%) produces a harder, more brittle film suitable for interior use on stable substrates. Higher RDP (2.5–4%) is recommended for exterior putty and any surface subject to thermal movement, vibration, or building settlement.
  • Q: Can your wall putty binder additives be used in gypsum board joint compound?
  • A: Yes. Low-viscosity HPMC (30,000–60,000 mPa·s) and low-MFT RDP grades are compatible with gypsum board joint compound formulations. They improve working consistency, reduce shrinkage cracking at joints, and allow feathering to a thin, clean edge. We recommend specifying low-ash white HPMC to avoid any discoloration at the joint line after painting.
  • Q: What is the minimum order quantity for wall putty binder additives?
  • A: Our minimum order quantity for export shipment is 1 MT per product line. For customers wishing to evaluate multiple grades, we can consolidate mixed products into a single LCL shipment. Sample quantities (200 g–1 kg) are available before any bulk commitment.
