Cellulose ethers are produced by reacting cellulose — the most abundant natural polymer on earth — with etherifying agents under alkaline conditions. The resulting products retain the backbone of cellulose while gaining functional side groups that impart water solubility, surface activity, and rheological control.

Cellulose ethers are multi-sector ingredients with proven performance across demanding environments:
- Construction: Used in dry-mix mortars, tile adhesives, wall putty, and EIFS systems to improve workability, open time, and adhesion.
- Coatings & Paints: Act as rheology modifiers and thickeners in water-based architectural and industrial coatings.
- Oil & Gas: Serve as fluid-loss control agents and viscosifiers in drilling muds and completion fluids.
- Personal Care: Provide stable viscosity in shampoos, lotions, and toothpastes.
- Pharmaceuticals: Used as tablet binders, film coaters, and controlled-release matrix materials.
- Food & Agriculture: Applied as texturizers, emulsifiers, and film coatings (food-grade grades only).
Dosage typically ranges from 0.1% to 1.5% by weight depending on the application and target viscosity. Always pre-disperse powder in dry blends or use hot-cold water dissolution technique for aqueous systems.
