Product Overview
Methyl cellulose (MC) and its mixed-substituent derivatives (HPMC, HEMC) are produced by reacting alkali cellulose with methyl chloride under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. The degree of methyl substitution (DS) determines the water solubility, gel temperature, and thermal behavior of the product.
A defining characteristic of methyl cellulose derivatives is inverse thermal gelation: solutions that are fluid at low temperatures form rigid gels when heated above the gel point (typically 50–90°C), and return to solution upon cooling. This property is exploited in construction mortars to prevent substrate over-absorption in hot conditions, in food applications for fat replacement and texture modification, and in pharmaceutical controlled-release systems.
